A
360° profile measuring is achieved by combining the Spot
Laser Measurement System LARA and a one-dimen- sional
deflection unit. By rotating the deflection mirror around
the optical axis of the laser measuring system, a 360°
profile measuring is possible. The number of revolutions
of the mirror can be deter- mined and is equivalent to the
measured profiles per second. Each of these 360°
profiles consists of individual measuring points (always
range
value and
reflectance
value),
more than 500,000 data points per second, depending
on the
data sampling rate of the laser measurement system. The
achieved angle accuracy is based upon the encoder.
The
full coverage of a large section of the
environment (e.g. tunnel, roads etc) is realised by moving
through the environment while measuring perpendicularly to
the direction of motion. Locally successive profiles
(helix) are arranged into a picture where depending on the
speed of the carrier vehicle the lateral distance
between two profiles can be varied. The helix is
comparable to a spiral spring.
